Baby Face Poem

He had a baby face
So innocent, so young
Hard to imagine
It had seen either side of a gun
Knowing he’d lost his whole childhood
Made me undone
But some would shrug and say
He’s just another lost one

He tried to act all hard
He tried his best to intimidate me
When he stared me down
Of course I could see

I saw a baby face
I saw a kid I wanted to embrace
To tell him I know life hadn’t been so kind
To help him see, to change his life
He needed to change his mind
To help him face the honest truth
That life cannot rewind
To let him know
It’s new
friends
That he needed to find

I think I drove him crazy
When he tried to be intimidating
He thought, “if you knew what I could do…”
In my boots I’d be shaking
I didn’t read his charges
I didn’t want to know
Because in spite of everything
I wanted to just see him grow

Its hard to take these kids so seriously
But that is also needed, because honestly
They’re in a bad position
And not many are willing to listen

He had a baby face
But he knew how to empty a case
And not show remorse
When the bullets took course
